The new 5-million-cubic-foot biorepository enhances cold chain logistics, expands biopharma storage capacity, and strengthens New Jersey’s position as a life sciences hub.

Earlier this week, SciSafe, a provider of biological and pharmaceutical storage services, held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to announce the opening its latest biorepository plant in East Brunswick, NJ.1 The new facility has storage capacity of over 5 million cubic feet.

Strategic location along the I-95 corridor

There is a popular phrase that goes “location, location, location,” and that couldn’t be any more true. In this particular case, SciSafe’s building can be found right off of U-95 corridor, making it convenient to get to both major highways and international airports.

Strategically, this provides SciSafe with the opportunity to provide same-day cold chain fulfillment, while the latest infrastructure allows for meeting other customer needs in regard to supporting the oncology and cell and gene therapy spaces by offering patient sample storage services.

“This facility marks a major milestone for the incredible team that’s been with us through the years,” noted Garrie Richardson, SciSafe’s founder and CEO. “We started with two freezers and a dream, and today we’re supporting cutting-edge oncology research and much more, with a level of care and service that sets us apart. Our people made this possible.”

Expanded cold chain storage and GMP capacity

Specifically, this new facility supports capacity for:

  1. Over 500 cryogenic freezers (-196°C to -150°C)
  2. More than 1,500 ultra-low (-80°C) temperature freezers
  3. Delivering precision in cold chain logistics with knowledge in compliance expertise, real-time visibility, and customized shipping solutions
  4. Good manufacturing practice (GMP) warehousing capacity with more than 15,000 CRT pallet positions

Plus, with the addition of warehouse management system and client portal, customers are able to gain real-time insight into their inventory and the confidence of accurate, on-time retrieval.

“New Jersey is proud to be the home of SciSafe’s latest expansion,” said. New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy, who attended the ribbon-cutting event, “This new facility is a testament to our state’s role as a global leader in life sciences and innovation. By investing in cutting-edge infrastructure and creating high-quality jobs, SciSafe is helping to strengthen our economy while supporting groundbreaking research that will improve lives here in New Jersey and around the world.”

Local leaders also praised the expansion’s economic and industry impact.

“We’re thrilled to see SciSafe expand in East Brunswick,” said East Brunswick Mayor Brad Cohen. “This new facility is a tremendous investment in our community, bringing quality jobs and reinforcing our township as a destination for growth in the biotech and health care industries. We look forward to a strong partnership that benefits both residents and the broader region.”

Insights from LogiPharma USA

In other news, the Pharmaceutical Commerce team just returned from LogiPharma USA in Boston, a pharma supply chain conference. Plenty of coverage was gathered during the event, including a session on ways to tackle temperature monitoring in direct-to-patient shipments.2

The session dove into ways to build real-time visibility and control into the last mile; choose the right level of monitoring, including an active, passive, or hybrid model; make sure packaging, technology, and courier services for at-home shipments are all aligned; and alleviate risk in patient settings.
